Claude Code vs claude.ai
Two ways to work with the same Claude: a browser chat for questions and drafting, and Claude Code for hands-on work in your actual files.
It helps to clear up one thing straight away: claude.ai and Claude Code are not rivals, and you do not have to pick a winner. They are two ways to work with the same Claude. One lives in your browser as a chat. The other lives in your files. Most people use both, reaching for whichever suits the task in front of them.
The two side by side
The simplest way to see the difference is to line them up. Notice that neither is “better”. They are shaped for different kinds of work.
claude.ai versus Claude Code
| claude.ai (browser chat) | Claude Code (in your files) |
|---|---|
| Graphical interface (GUI): point, click, and type in a browser | Command-line interface (CLI): type instructions in a terminal |
| Runs in your web browser | Runs in a terminal on your computer, or in VS Code’s built-in one |
| Nothing to install, ready as soon as you sign in | Needs a short one-time setup, covered on the next two pages |
| Works with files you upload, one at a time | Works directly on every file in your project folder |
| You paste in copies and copy the answer back out | Reads and edits the real files, in place |
| Best for questions, analysis, and drafting | Best for repetitive, file-heavy work |
| Answers you | Carries out multi-step tasks and shows you what it did |
Same Claude, two settings. Pick the one that fits the task, not the other way around.
When to reach for each
A good rule of thumb: start in the browser, and add Claude Code when the work becomes hands-on.
Reach for claude.ai when you have a question, want something analyzed, or need a draft. “Summarize this teaser under four headings.” “What are the risks in this thesis?” “Draft an email to the management team.” These are one-off, think-and-answer tasks, and the browser chat is perfect for them.
Reach for Claude Code when the work is about the files themselves, especially when it repeats. Tidying a data pack, applying the same fix across a folder of memos, reconciling figures between two exports, working through a set of files one after another. This is where editing in place, and doing it the same way every time, earns its keep.
Most investment professionals begin with claude.ai for everyday questions and drafting, then bring in Claude Code once they have a hands-on, file-heavy job that a chat window cannot comfortably do.
