What Claude Is (and Isn't)

A plain-English picture of what Claude.ai can do for deal work, and the limits to respect.

A 60-page CIM lands at 6pm and the screen is due tomorrow. Claude can turn that document into a structured one-page read in the time it takes to make a coffee. That is the real draw for Private Equity work, but the tool only earns its place when you know exactly where its strengths end and your judgment begins.

What Claude is

Claude.ai is an AI assistant you talk to in plain English. You give it context (a document, a question, an instruction) and it responds with written analysis, drafts, summaries, or answers. Think of it as an exceptionally fast, well-read analyst who has read everything you give it and never tires.

For Private Equity professionals, that translates into real, everyday leverage:

  • Summarizing long documents: distill a 60-page CIM or teaser into the points that matter in minutes.
  • Drafting: produce a first cut of an investment memo section, an IC paper, or a management-meeting agenda.
  • Research synthesis: pull scattered notes, articles, and filings into one coherent market view.
  • Data analysis: interrogate a spreadsheet, sense-check figures, and surface trends worth a second look.

Here’s a starter prompt you can adapt for almost any document on your desk:

Prompt · Summarize a CIM or teaser

You are assisting a Private Equity associate. I’ve attached a teaser for a potential acquisition.

Summarize it in one page using these headings:

  1. Business overview (what they do, how they make money)
  2. Financial highlights (revenue, EBITDA, growth, margins)
  3. Investment thesis (why this could be attractive)
  4. Key risks and open questions

Use bullet points. Flag anything that looks unusual or that the document is vague about.

What Claude isn’t

Claude is powerful, but it is not magic, and treating it as infallible is how mistakes reach the investment committee.

Strengths vs. limits

Claude is great atClaude is not
Summarizing and structuring documents you provideA live database of current market prices or news (unless connected)
Drafting and rewriting in a consistent toneA replacement for your commercial judgment
Synthesising research you give itGuaranteed to be correct; it can be confidently wrong
Analyzing data inside an attached fileAware of anything you haven’t told it

Use the left column with confidence; manage the right column deliberately.

Three limits deserve special attention:

  • It is not a live data feed. Out of the box, Claude doesn’t know today’s share price or this morning’s news. It works from what you give it (and, when enabled, from connectors or web search, covered later).
  • It does not replace judgment. Claude can structure an argument; deciding whether the deal is good is yours.
  • It can be confidently wrong. The output always reads fluently and authoritatively, even when a figure or fact is invented. This is the single most important thing to internalize.

The takeaway

Claude is a fast, capable partner for reading, drafting, and synthesizing, used with the right context and verified against the source. Keep the judgment, and the final sign-off, firmly with you. Everything that follows in this guide is about doing exactly that, well. With the fundamentals in place, take the Interface Tour to see where each of these tasks actually happens on screen.
